If I was starting from scratch I think I would go with Exposure over Lr. Having said this I'm still wedded (or perhaps welded) to Lr as I have a lot of investment in the Library, but I keep Exposure updated and frequently use it as an alternative. It doesn't have Lr's suite of "Profiles", but frankly, 7 profiles, none of which look good, is no advantage over 1 basic starting point which actually does look good. Actually, Exposure X4 renders blue sky absolutely beautifully, better even than Iridient. the initial rendering of Raw files is very flat - which actually also doesn't bother me. Where it does fall behind a little is that lack of "Auto" tools, although personally that doesn't bother me much, and also, at least for my cameras (Olympus). It has fully-fledged Layers, in fact Layers are core to its functionality rather than an afterthought, and features such as Layer opacity allow it to do a lot more than Lightroom or indeed CaptureOne. This makes it much faster when importing and browsing, and at the same time it is gradually building up a useful set of DAM tools, for example recently adding Smart Albums. It is a lot like Lightroom, but does not use a database. It also includes the previously standalone Bokeh plugin. AlienSkin has been around since the early days of digital imaging and Exposure X has evolved from their highly regarded film simulation Exposure plug-in. I wouldn't call it cheap as such, but it is strangely overlooked compared to upstarts like Luminar et al.
